Short description:

To be eligible for the maximum points in the virtual testing load cases under Euro NCAP’s 2026 Frontal Impact Protocol, vehicle manufacturers must also provide Human Body Model (HBM) simulation data. Although these simulation results are currently used only for monitoring and not to assess injury risk, a qualified HBM, as defined in Technical Bulletin CP550, must be used, and the simulations must adhere to the quality criteria set out in Technical Bulletin CP551.

This webinar provides an overview of how HBM qualification works, which results must be provided when using an already qualified HBM, and what to consider when preparing frontal HBM simulations. The webinar will also outline planned updates for 2029.

Speaker bio:

Felix Ressi is a senior scientist at the Vehicle Safety Institute at Graz University of Technology, where he leads the occupant safety team within Corina Klug’s Crash and Injury Prevention research group. He worked with major Human Body Model (HBM) developers and other stakeholders to create the HBM qualification procedure for Euro NCAP, including publicly available HBM-agnostic simulation setups, open-source assessment notebooks, and a scoring methodology. Over the years, he has applied various HBMs in occupant safety projects with OEMs. For example, for his PhD thesis, he conducted 1,600 simulations using four HBMs from two families. Felix is a member of the Open Virtual Testing Organisation (OVTO).
